Double-Blind Peer Review Process
The BMI journal utilizes the Open Journal System to manage its operations. Manuscripts are accepted following a rigorous double-blind peer review process, which involves both multinational and national referees specializing in the relevant subject area. Authors should present their ideas clearly, keeping in mind that the primary objective of publication is the dissemination of biomedical and computational knowledge. Complex or poorly articulated work may obscure its significance.
Reviewers treat submitted manuscripts as confidential information, not to be disclosed before publication. No individual with access to a paper under review will misuse any of its content. The editor evaluates the reviewers’ recommendations and informs the authors of the manuscript’s status. The manuscript may be:
• Accepted for publication
• Accepted with minor corrections
• Accepted with major corrections requiring further review
• Rejected
Authors are notified of the initial editorial decision via email within two months. Feedback from editors and reviewers is shared with the authors, who are expected to address the suggested modifications and resubmit the manuscript within ten days of receiving the manuscript status.
Biannual Publication Frequency
The Journal of Biomedical Informatics (BMI) follows a hybrid publication model. Two formal issues are published each year:
• Issue 1: January–June
• Issue 2: July–December
In addition, BMI adopts an Open Issue model, whereby accepted articles are published online immediately upon completion of peer review and production, without waiting for the compilation of a full issue. These articles are subsequently incorporated into the nearest formal issue. This approach ensures the timely dissemination of research while maintaining structured indexing and archiving.
Copyrights
The Journal of Biomedical Informatics (BMI) applies the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license to all published articles. Authors of manuscripts accepted for publication in BMI retain the CC BY license. Under this Open Access license, authors grant permission for others to reuse the article in whole or in part for any purpose, including commercial use, provided that proper citation of the author and source is given. This policy facilitates reuse and ensures that BMI content remains widely accessible to support ongoing research and innovation.
If a manuscript contains photos, images, figures, tables, audio files, videos, or other materials not owned by the author or co-authors, BMI requires proof of written permission from the rightful owner confirming that the CC BY license may be applied to the content. BMI provides a standard permission form for this purpose. If such permission cannot be obtained, the author must remove or replace the content with material they own or have licensed rights to use.
Authors should not assume that previously published content with another publisher can automatically be reused in a BMI paper. Reuse depends on the license governing the original publication. Authors must verify their rights under the specific license and, if necessary, obtain written permission from the original publisher before including such content in their BMI submission. All reused content must be properly attributed.
Accompanying submitted data must comply with licensing policies that are not more restrictive than CC BY. BMI reserves the right to remove any photos, images, figures, tables, illustrations, audio, or video files from a manuscript before or after publication if they are included without proper permission from the content owner.
